Know What Engine Sounds to Listen Out For - Thelen Auto Group in Bay City, MI

Knowing When to Bring Your Vehicle in for Engine Servicing

While out and about in mid-Michigan, you need to be continually aware of what is going on with your vehicle. This includes listening for potential issues with your engine. Considering that you likely won’t have a visual idea of a potential engine situation, knowing what certain sounds can mean will help you determine whether or not you need to schedule a service appointment immediately. The Thelen Auto Group in Bay City, MI, would like to offer you advice as to what sounds likely require the most immediate attention and what they could mean.

Engine Sounds to Listen Out For

Clicking or Tapping – If you suddenly notice a distinct sound of either clicking or metallic tapping while driving, this likely means your engine’s oil is running low. If this is the case, pull over to a safe location and check oil levels if you have the equipment to do so. Otherwise, contact any of the Thelen Auto Group Service Centers to get your vehicle in for an oil change immediately. Attempting to drive on little to no oil can permanently damage your engine.

Loud Bang – A sound that is similar to a loud explosion is likely a backfire from the engine. If this happens, it is strongly advised to pull over immediately and call for roadside assistance. Trying to drive further with a backfiring engine could result in significant damage to the engine and other areas of the vehicle. Getting your vehicle in for an emergency service appointment is recommended after calling for a tow truck.

Screeching / Squealing – Another loud noise that will be immediately apparent, these sounds are often the result of your vehicle’s serpentine belts getting loose or damaged. Considering these belts handle a majority of vital processes that keep your engine running properly, having these belts replaced if they are showing noticeable signs of wear or looseness is important. Unless they are severely worn out or loose, you should be able to get your vehicle in for a service appointment without much issue. Just make sure to plan on scheduling with us as soon as possible after hearing these sounds.
