How to Check Your Oil Quickly & Easily

Know What to Have On Hand – When you are ready to check the oil levels in your vehicle, all you need is either a paper towel or a lint-free cloth. Other than these simple items, you don’t need any special tools or knowledge to check your vehicle’s oil. Prior to checking, make sure you have completely shut off your vehicle and allowed it to cool.

Pop the Hood, Locate the Dipstick & Wipe It Off – Start by opening the hood of your vehicle and then using the dedicated prop to keep it open. You are looking for a colored handle that often has a picture of an oil can on it. This is the oil dipstick and must be removed from its tube. Pull on the handle and then use your paper towel or cloth to wipe off any residual oil on the stick. Any levels being read at this stage are inaccurate. Then reinsert the stick into its tube.

Remove Dipstick Again & Read Levels – After a second or two of the dipstick being in its tube again, remove it and look at the metallic area. Notches or other forms of marking are used to determine if levels are high, low, or just right. If the top of the oil line resides in between the high and low markings, you don’t have to worry. However, please contact one of our dealerships for oil service if you notice the line is at or below the low notch. Running on low or no oil can cause significant damage to the engine.
