Help Make Your Pet Feel Comfortable & Happy During Your Travels
You want every member of your family to go spend time together traveling across Michigan, including your furry ones! If you are planning a road trip this summer and want to bring your pets along for the ride, the Thelen Auto Group in Bay City, MI, would like to share our favorite tips to make sure our pets are happy and healthy all trip long. Our pets will handle long car rides differently than us, and we need to be ready to cater to their needs so that everyone in the vehicle has an enjoyable experience from start to finish!
How Can You Cater to Your Pets?
Comfort on Long Rides – When you’re going on a long car trip with the family, you don’t want to be making frequent stops if you can avoid it. Not only does it take longer to complete the trip, but it can affect gas mileage. Our pets are generally not accustomed to being in a vehicle for a long period of time. If you are planning on bringing your pet along, ease them into the long trip by taking them for gradually longer car rides before your vacation. Start with a quick trip around the neighborhood and just before your planned vacation, take them on a journey along the highway. This way, your pet knows that the vehicle is a safe place and can ease the nerves they will feel. Having a spacious and comfortable kennel or crate will also keep your pet safe during the car ride!
Toys & Other Items – Another great way to keep your pet occupied and destressed during long car rides is by bringing along a bag full of their favorite toys, stuffed animals, and other items that they love playing with. Keeping their attention away from the car trip and to something they enjoy will make the ride more hassle-free for everyone in the vehicle. For cleanliness, make sure you bring along waste bags and waste scoops so that when you do stop, you can pick up after your pet. Having a leash is also advised during long trips, even if your pet is good at obeying commands.
Food/Water/Medicine – Just like the humans in your family, your pets will require plenty of food and water to keep them happy and healthy during long trips. Bringing an extra bottle or two of water along with their food or water bowl is a fantastic way to keep your furry companion hydrated. If your pet has special dietary restrictions, always make sure you bring plenty of food that your pet can safely eat. Likewise, don’t forget to bring any medicines that your pet might be on.
