Winter Driving

We are quickly approaching the winter season here in Michigan and we have already had a small taste of the snow we should prepare to expect.  Whether it is snow, sleet, or ice, driving during the wintertime can be dangerous if you do not get yourself and your vehicle prepared.  Keep yourself and those on the road around you safe in the upcoming months with these helpful tips!

First and foremost, slow down!

It is hard to control your vehicle on a slippery road, so be sure to increase the space between you and the vehicle in front of you.  With a larger following distance, you can be ready to slow down or stop in time if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly.  This also includes driving around snowplows or trucks.  These vehicles purposely drive slowly to clear the roads for everyone to drive safely – so do not crowd them or speed past to get around them!

Minimize your distractions.

Although we should avoid distractions while driving in any weather condition, it is even more important during wintry conditions.  Fiddling around with your radio, making phone calls, or even having a pet in the vehicle can all be unneeded distractions while driving in the snow.  Be more cautious and vigilant while on the road!

Get your vehicle winterized.

There are many things you can do to better prepare your car, truck, or SUV for slippery road conditions.  This includes making sure your tires are properly inflated and have deep enough tread for grip.  You should also be sure your windshield wipers can efficiently wipe away falling snow and your windshield wiper fluid is full.  Always keep your gas tank full or at least above half tank during the winter to avoid issues. Plus, invest in sand or kitty litter to keep in the trunk in case you get stuck.  Be sure to wipe snow and ice off your vehicle before driving – this includes clearing your license plate and headlights/brake lights.  Lastly, replacing your vehicle’s battery or checking its charge is a great idea too.

Don’t use cruise control.

We know it is a convenient feature but this goes hand in hand with being in control of your driving while it is snowing.  Using cruise control does not give you the full control over your vehicle that you really need on a slippery road.  Even distance pacing cruise control features will not sufficiently protect you from sliding while braking. So, be aware of the dangers of using this technology during hazardous winter weather and keep this excellent feature for less challenging driving conditions.
