Be Prepared With A Vehicle Emergency Kit

There is nothing worse than finding yourself on the side of the road without the proper tools you need to stay safe, or even get yourself back on the road. No matter what the weather is, an emergency kit should have items for just about any situation. Below we will go over a few of our suggestions from Thelen Auto Group in mid-Michigan that we also use in our own emergency kits. Be sure to replenish any depleted items as needed!

What Should I Put in a Vehicle Emergency Kit?

  • First Aid Kit – Be prepared for any minor medical emergency with a loaded first aid kit. It doesn’t have to have everything under the sun, but we do recommend the basics like bandages, alcohol pads, tweezers, latex gloves, gauze, and antiseptic.
  • Portable Cell Phone Charger – Most everyone has a cell phone charger in their vehicle, but if you are dealing with a dead battery or run out of fuel, you may find yourself without the ability to recharge. You can purchase portable chargers inexpensively to have packed before you hit the road.
  • Spare Tire Equipment – Always keep a spare tire and the necessary tools associated with changing a tire! A jack, a tire iron, and a tire gauge will be helpful if you find yourself with a flat tire.
  • Jumper Cables – Another reason you may find yourself stranded – a dead battery. If you pack jumper cables you can call sometone to give you a jump start or ask for assistance from a passerby. You could also purchase a jump starter instead to do it yourself but consider the amount of trunk space this option will occupy.
  • Shovel and Ice Scraper – If you find yourself in an unsafe situation during the winter, packing a small shovel alongside your ice scraper can help dig you out, if needed. We also recommend packing either sand or kitty liter to help get traction.
